Potemkin City Limits
I knew I’d be impressed.
I waited for this for atleast 3 years, but when the time came I sat on my ass and stayed apathetic for a reason that is still unclear to me.
Perhaps it was the metalhead in me refusing it. But finally, I have achieved a higher state of existence and obtained the newest Propagandhi release.
When ‘Todays Empires, Tomorrows Ashes’ came out, I instantly deemed it my single favorite CD in my collection. There was no transition period or ‘warming up’ to the album whatsoever. Less than halfway through the first song and I was in complete awe.
This release is not quite the same. But then again, I didn’t expect it to be. The only thing I did expect was absolutely prolific and original material. The lyrics on any given Propagandhi album can span from Animal Cruelty to Economic Policy, from masturbation to globalization. Either way, they are always likely to make me think, laugh, and get angry all in the same song. Before even listening to this CD I read all of the lyrics - which, by the way, are basically informal and grammatically-mediocre essays. Once I actually popped in the CD, I was blown away by the first song. Musically it was well-written and vocally there were definitely some differences from the last release. In a good way? Maybe. I’m still not sure.
As the tracks progressed there were some songs that bored me, I’ll admit. To be honest I even skipped a couple songs after a minute or so. But plenty of CDs have done the same for me and ended up being on my list of favorites. Talent-wise, Propagandhi is impeccable. Shredding on guitar, full-force pounding on drums, technical and original bass lines and unexpected vocal patterns.
This release by Propagandhi is quite different, but if you are a fan of them I would reccommend giving it a shot and I doubt you will be disappointed.
